Purpose

To indicate the intent to create a new version of a configuration item (check out), and to make the new version of the configuration item persistent in the configuration management database (check in).

This Tool Mentor is applicable when running Windows NT 4.0.

To check out and check in configuration items with ClearCase:

  1. Check out the files that you want to change.
  2. Make changes and perform unit tests to verify the changes.
  3. Check in the changes.

Tool Steps

  1. Check out the files that you want to change:
    1. From the Windows Explorer, select the item or items to check out
    2. From the ClearCase context menu, choose ClearCase -> Check Out...
    3. Type your comment in the Check Out dialog box and click OK.
    4. See the ClearCase User's Manual or the on-line Help for ClearCase for more information about checking out files.

  2. Make changes and perform unit tests to verify the changes
  3. Check in the changes:
    1. From the Windows Explorer, select the item or items to check in
    2. From the ClearCase context menu, choose ClearCase -> Check In...
    3. Type your comment in the Check In dialog box and click OK.
