Core Workflows

Introduction to Core Workflows

A core workflow shows all activities you may go through to produce a particular set of artifacts. We describe these workflows at an overview level - a summary of all workers, activities, and artifacts that are involved. We also show at a more detailed level how workers collaborate and use and produce artifacts. The steps at this detailed level are called "workflow details".

We separate core process workflows from core supporting workflows. The former are development activities, while the latter are management and infrastructure activities.

See Process Architecture for an explanation of how core workflows relate to phases and iterations.

Descriptions of Core Workflow

Each core workflow is described as follows:

Introduction
  • Purpose, of the workflow
  • Relationships to Other Workflows
  • Concepts, which are important in order to understand the workflow.
Activity Overview
The activities and workers in the workflow.
Artifact Overview
The artifacts that are produced in this workflow, and the workers that are responsible.
Workflow Details
Workflow details are groupings of activities that are done "together", presented with input and resulting artifacts. Since the workflow details are not necessarily performed in sequence, you may alternate between them during an iteration.

Note that not all workflows have workflow details defined for them.
